FAQ’s

1. What is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy?

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a modern and up to date approach. A highly effective and safe form of talking psychotherapy (taking elements of SFBT, CBT and NLP) combined with hypnosis. It is based entirely on neuroscience. We work on moving forward and becoming the best version of yourself, without the need to revisit the past or focus on the problem. It combines both conscious and sub-conscious change.

2. Who will benefit?

Almost anyone! We see people from many walks of life who are struggling with a range of symptoms such as anxiety, depression, overwhelm, IBS, panic attacks, low confidence and insomnia to name but a few. To see a wider list please visit the Treatments section of the website. The more committed and willing you are to make changes and to engage in the therapy process, the more you will benefit.

3. What is hypnosis? Will I be put to sleep?!

No! Hypnotherapy couldn’t be any further away from the clock swinging images you may have in your mind! Hypnosis (commonly referred to as trance) is ordinary in many ways, we go into it many times a day, when we are driving, out walking, watching television etc. We do it all the time. It is a perfectly natural state in which you have full control at all times. Hypnosis or trance is a special focusing of the consciousness which is brought about through relaxation, when we are in this state we have access to the subconscious mind, enabling us to make positive decisions and move forward in life. You won’t have to speak or do anything at all, other than sit back and listen to the sound of my voice with some relaxing music playing in the background. You might find that you’re focused on what I’m saying or you might find that you’re thinking about what you’re going to have for dinner! Either is absolutely fine and you will still be taking everything in and allowing your brain to process what we discuss in the session.

Many people believe that hypnotherapy is something that is ‘done’ to them, that they explain their issue to the therapist who then simply hypnotises their problem away, as if by magic. But Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a much more collaborative process and it’s important to understand that change happens because you want it to and because you are prepared to take the necessary steps to allow it to happen.

4. Will I have to talk about my past?

Not at all. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy does not address the past in any way. We focus on the present and helping you to move forward in life.

5. What can I expect from a session?

The session is made up of two parts. During the first part of the session we use forward thinking positive talking therapy to support you to move forward, not go over the past. We celebrate what’s been good for you and your successes. We guide you to find your own solutions to your problems. The second part of the session is hypnosis. The special focusing of your subconscious enables you to consolidate what we’ve discussed in the session, to find solutions to your problems and take on board positive suggestion. Just lie back, get comfy, relax and listen! Expect a collaborative process where we work together, lots of science and understanding of how your brain works and most importantly, fun! It is rare that my clients and I don’t laugh during a session. If you are looking to spend a lot of time bringing up your past then this is not the right therapy for you. It is positive and forward thinking and we make steps towards your preferred future without having to address the past.

6. How many sessions will I need?

The average number of sessions tends to be around 8-12. However, this is entirely dependent on the individual and other varying factors. This would be discussed further at the initial consultation. Solution Focused Therapy is known as brief therapy, which means we work fairly quickly. Sessions are recommended on a weekly basis to start with. Most clients then tend to reduce their sessions to fortnightly and so on once they start to feel much better in themselves.

7. Can you work with children?

Yes. The therapy is perfectly safe and enjoyable for children! Katie holds an enhanced DBS certificate and has many years’ experience of working with children. She works with children from aged 8 upwards.

8. Does it work online?

Absolutely! Sessions are exactly the same and just as effective. Many clients have completed their whole therapy journey online from start to finish. You get to be comfy at home in your pyjamas and cut out unnecessary travel time!

9. Where do I start?!

The best and first place to start is with the initial consultation. This is a great opportunity for you to find out more about the therapy and meet Katie. In the consultation Katie will ask you some basic questions and find out more about how she can help and what you’d like to achieve. She will then explain, in detail, how the process works and the science behind it. Feel free to bring with you any questions that you may want answering. By the end of the consultation you’ll have a much better idea of what to expect from sessions going forward. There is no obligation to go ahead with sessions following the consultation.
