Hypnotherapy for Children & Young People

Children’s Hypnotherapy (aged 8+)

Helping young minds feel calmer, more confident and better equipped to navigate life’s challenges.

Growing up isn’t always easy. Children and young people face all sorts of challenges, from school pressures and friendships to worries, fears and managing big emotions.

As parents, it can be difficult watching your child struggle, particularly when you’re unsure how best to help.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy offers a gentle, positive and supportive approach for children aged 8 and over, helping them develop confidence, recognise their strengths and build useful skills for navigating life’s ups and downs.

Rather than focusing heavily on what’s going wrong, we work together to explore what they’d like to be different and the small, achievable steps that can help them move forward.

How Can Hypnotherapy Help Children?

Every child is different, and the challenges they experience can vary enormously.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy may be helpful for children and young people experiencing:

  • Anxiety and excessive worrying – helping children develop ways to feel calmer and more in control.
  • Confidence and self-esteem difficulties – encouraging them to recognise their abilities, strengths and achievements.
  • School-related worries – including friendship difficulties, school transitions, exam pressure and anxiety around attending school.
  • Sleep difficulties – supporting healthier sleep habits and helping children feel more relaxed at bedtime.
  • Big emotions and emotional regulation – developing a greater understanding of feelings and useful ways of responding to them.
  • Fears and phobias – helping children develop confidence in situations they currently find challenging.
  • Change and transitions – supporting children through new schools, family changes and other significant life events.
  • Overthinking and negative thought patterns – encouraging a more helpful and balanced way of thinking.

The aim isn’t to eliminate every worry or difficult emotion. These are all normal parts of being human.

Instead, it’s about helping children develop the confidence, resilience and practical coping skills to manage life’s challenges more effectively.

A Positive, Solution-Focused Approach

One of the things I love about Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is that we don’t need to spend lots of time exploring problems or revisiting difficult experiences.

This can be particularly beneficial for children who may find it difficult to explain how they’re feeling or who simply don’t want to talk about what’s been troubling them.

Instead, we focus on:

  • What’s already going well in their lives.
  • Their individual strengths, abilities and resources.
  • What they’d like to feel or do differently.
  • The small, positive changes they’re already making.
  • Helping them recognise their own progress.

Sessions are adapted to suit each child’s age, personality and individual needs, creating a relaxed, encouraging environment where they can feel comfortable being themselves.

There is no pressure to share anything they’re not ready to discuss.

How Does Hypnotherapy Work for Children?

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy combines positive, future-focused conversation with relaxation techniques and guided imagery.

During our sessions, I also introduce children to an age-appropriate understanding of how their brain works, helping them make sense of why they might sometimes feel worried, overwhelmed or frustrated.

Understanding that these responses are a normal part of how our brains work can be reassuring and empowering.

We then explore ways they can begin to feel more confident and in control.

The relaxation element uses gentle, calming language and imagination to encourage a relaxed state of focused attention.

Children remain in control throughout, and there is no expectation for them to do anything they’re uncomfortable with.

For younger children, sessions may be more playful and imaginative, while older children and teenagers may prefer a more conversational approach.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach.

What Happens During a Session?

Initial Consultation:

Our first appointment provides an opportunity to understand what support your child may benefit from and what you would both like to achieve.

I’ll explain how Solution Focused Hypnotherapy works in a clear, age-appropriate way, including a little about how the brain responds to stress and worry.

It’s also an opportunity for your child to meet me, ask questions and begin feeling comfortable with the process.

We’ll discuss how sessions will work, including parental involvement, confidentiality and any individual needs or adjustments.

Ongoing Sessions:

Each session is tailored to your child and their stage of development.

We’ll spend time recognising positive experiences, identifying strengths and exploring small steps towards the changes they’d like to make.

Sessions may also include guided relaxation, visualisation and other age-appropriate techniques to help support a sense of calm and confidence.

Progress happens at different rates for different children, and we’ll review how things are going together.

Supporting Parents Along the Way

Parents and carers play an important role in helping children feel supported.

I understand that seeking help for your child can sometimes feel like a big step, particularly when you’ve already tried different ways of helping them.

My approach is collaborative and supportive, with appropriate parental involvement while also respecting your child’s privacy, independence and need to feel heard.

We’ll agree how communication and feedback will work, always keeping your child’s wellbeing at the centre of the process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is hypnotherapy suitable for children?

Hypnotherapy can be adapted for children and young people, using age-appropriate language, relaxation and imagination. Suitability is considered individually, and we’ll discuss whether this approach is appropriate for your child during the initial consultation.

Will my child be asleep or lose control?

No. Despite its name, hypnosis isn’t the same as being asleep. It’s a relaxed state of focused attention, similar to becoming absorbed in a story or daydream. Your child remains in control and can speak or stop at any time.

Does my child have to talk about what’s worrying them?

Not necessarily. One of the benefits of a solution-focused approach is that we don’t need to explore every detail of a problem to begin working towards positive change.

How many sessions will my child need?

Every child is different. The number of sessions will depend on their individual needs, goals and progress. We can discuss this during the initial consultation and review it as we go.

Whether your child is struggling with worries, lacking confidence or simply finding things a little overwhelming, Solution Focused Hypnotherapy offers a positive, supportive space to explore what they’d like to be different.

The aim is to help children recognise the strengths they already have and develop the confidence to use them.
